Beijing Zoo sees first baby pandas since 2003

July 5, 2010 |13:16 | Zoo News  By : Team X

The family of animals at Beijing Zoo grew on Friday with the arrival of a pair of panda babies at about 10 am. They were the first pandas to be born at the zoo since 2003, according to Beijing Times. One of the twins is still at the zoo, being cared for by its parents, while the other was sent to Ya'an in Sichuan province where its parents, Gugu and Yinghua, were born. Pandas typically care for one twin and abandon the other, necessitating the move.

"The 109-gram baby panda sent to us, which does not yet have a name, is probably a male but its gender cannot be definitively worked out by us until it is around three years old," a worker with the Ya'an-based China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda told local media. The baby panda in Sichuan is being fed with milk from its grandmother that the center had collected and frozen. Baby pandas need breast milk to improve their immunity during the first three days of life

Zoo plans 'Jurassic Park' experiment

July 3, 2010 |16:38 | Zoo News  By : Team X

Zoo plans Jurassic Park experimentSan Diego Zoo is planning to use frozen cells of dead animals in an attempt to bring endangered species back from the brink of extinction, the Daily Telegraph is reporting.

The Jurassic Park-style experiments are the collaboration of researchers at the Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla and the zoo, who will create stem cells from a dead drill monkey, an endangered species native to Equatorial Guinea, Nigeria and Cameroon.

The cells will then be persuaded to become sperm and egg cells and will be implanted into the womb of another monkey, and will hopefully form.

A viable foetus. An extinct animal has already been bought to life, though the experiment was not a total success. The Pyrenean ibex was cloned using skin samples and the eggs of a domestic goat, though the animal died shortly after birth.

Pets, humans well behaved

July 2, 2010 |13:29 | Pets  By : Team X

I placed my panting pooch on the table at the Journal booth, then silently counted down. And, three, two, one ... "Oh, she's so cute! What kind of dog is that?" And so it began. The humans I met at Pets in the Park last weekend had no interest in me; it was my sweet, little white Pomeranian they wanted to meet, which is as it should be.

Because of Keesha, I had the chance to meet dozens of Journal readers, pet lovers and pet owners, and hear their stories. The best part, though, was being able to meet their pets: Nova, Charlie, Henry, Jet, Maggie, Bubbles, Homer, Jinx, Ginger, Teddy, Missy and dozens of other adorable furry faces whose names I never learned.

Mouse was a Pomeranian with the saddest eyes I've ever seen, but her story was a happy one. Her human rescued her from a puppy mill four years ago, when she was a skinny, mite-ridden puppy. Sir was a breed of German shepherd I had never heard of before -- and a certain size. His head was the size of Keesha's entire body.

A young Bengal tiger mauled a three-year-old girl after breaking free from its handlers at an Indonesian zoo, a spokeswoman said Tuesday, leaving the toddler with head injuries that required surgery.

The 10-month-old male tiger, called Ony, attacked Angelica Rosa while it was being transferred between enclosures at Taman Safari Prigen zoo in East Java on Monday morning, park spokeswoman Tisa Ananda said.

"Two keepers were walking the tiger on a leash to an exercise area when all of a sudden he ran very fast and attacked the girl," Ananda told AFP. "It seems that the tiger, who's only 10 months old, was excited to see the girl and wanted to play with her."

Wellington Zoo may get giant pandas

June 23, 2010 |13:23 | Zoo News  By : Team X

Mayor Kerry Prendergast's office has confirmed that the possibility of bringing the pandas to the capital was discussed when Ms Prendergast met the Mayor of Beijing in China at the beginning of June. The zoo's chief executive, Karen Fifield says major infrastructure changes would be needed if the giant pandas came. Part of the zoo would have to be redeveloped to house them, she says.

In Adelaide, the number of visitors to the city's zoo has gone up 70% since giant pandas took up residence there six months ago. Wellington Zoo says that's an exciting prospect. Discussions are at an early stage, however, and nothing's in black and white yet.
